A Vacancy or an Opportunity? Vacancies are limited, opportunities are limitless By George Muenz We are so conditioned to think of acquiring a job through the application for a vacancy or opening that we often forget to focus on what is in fact a far larger pool. Opportunity. The process of the job search also directs people towards a vacancy approach and the clerical review of whether the person “fits” the job description. However, any company or organization has in fact unlimited opportunities. I would be seriously worried about any company or organization that claimed. “Nope, we’re good, we have no more markets to target, no more customers to gain, no more products or services to develop, no programs to develop and launch”, “We’re done and sitting pretty, thank you.” Decision makers at potential employers think OPPORTUNITY. “If only we had the resources to go after this market segment, or to develop this product or to offer this service.” You come along and discuss possible market opportunities with these decision makers and suddenly they are thinking, “Wait a minute, Jim or Sarah would be prefect for this opportunity”. You just created your own job. Opportunities are vast and limited only by imagination. Focus on what opportunities might be there for the organization that is of interest to you and see where you might offer value. If you are just applying for a vacancy, you are competing with all the other applicants, and often screened on keywords or other limiters. A classic example is the recent acquisition of WhatsApp by Facebook for $19 Billion. Both founders of WhatsApp had applied for and been rejected for jobs at Facebook prior to founding their company. They missed the vacancy but certainly scored big on the opportunity. PE George Muenz is Branch Manager at CareerJoy Certified Career Development Practitioner (CCDP).
