While job openings have increased toward the end
of 2020 a big employment gap remains for 2021.
With the unemployment rates still high for diverse
groups companies need to look to ensure they are
reaching those diverse groups and ensuring that
they are given the same opportunities in the hiring
process.
Recruiting Diverse Candidates
When looking at recruitment efforts companies
want to make sure that every candidate is given
a fair chance through the process which includes
looking to reduce unconscious bias, reaching
out to diverse candidates, and ensuring the
recruitment process is reviewed regularly.
Reducing Unconscious Bias
When looking to reduce unconscious bias start
by reviewing the recruitment process for potential
bias and disparate impact. Then ensure that you
train talent acquisition and hiring managers on
the recruitment process and unconscious bias.
Additionally, consider using blind screening
tools, like AI Candidate Matching, cohort hiring
and diverse hiring committees to help with
unconscious bias.
Circa’s new AI Candidate Matching can help
companies to reduce bias in recruitment while
reaching out to diverse candidates. AI Candidate
Matching takes the civilian labor force above and
includes additional groups that are not counted or
have a hard time being accurately counted in that
labor force from more than 3,500 diversity groups
including the below groups.
●● Approximately 2.1 million discouraged
workers (BLS)
●● Approximately 5.9 million gig workers (BLS)
40 Article
●● Approximately 8-10 million unemployed
●● Approximately 24 million military individuals
and their spouses
Additionally, AI Candidate can remove biases from
job descriptions and blindly screen candidates to
remove ethnicity, gender, name, education, age,
or other factors to ensure that you are focused
on matching the candidate’s skills to your job
requirements.
Reaching out to Diverse Candidates
Branching out from your normal recruitment
channels can help to bring in more diverse
candidates who are looking for jobs. Look to
leverage state workforce agencies such as your
Local Veteran Employment Representative,
Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, One-Stop
Career Centers, and State Job Banks.
Additionally, connecting with Community-
Based Organizations can help a lot as well.
Community-Based Organizations work with a lot
of different companies to focus on selecting the
right candidates for each position, showcasing
the different ways their candidates can help a
company and further expanding the reach of
each job to more diverse candidates. Included in
Community-Based Organizations is leveraging
Historically Black Colleges and Universities, the
Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities
and other Hispanic serving academic institutions,
the American Indian Higher Education Consortium,
the Tribal Colleges and Universities, and the Asian
Pacific Islander Association of Colleges and
Universities. Tapping into these different channels
and being proactive with recruitment can help to
bring in more qualified, diverse candidates.
