The State of Mental Health & Stress
in the Workplace
In some organizations, initiatives that focus on mental health and stress in the
workplace are shifting from a reactive approach to a more proactive one. The goal is
to prevent problems as well as boost employee engagement levels. Why the shift?
One key reason is that the amount of money that U.S. companies spend on the mental
health and stress of their employees has been rising rapidly — with annual costs
increasing twice as fast as all other medical expenses in recent years. Our study
examines the drivers of this trend and the extent to which employers are offering
mental health initiatives as part of their employee benefits plans. It also examines
the range of available options, how those options affect issues such as employee
commitment and engagement, and what the impacts are on health outcomes.
